This is an advanced-level traffic engineering position to support the Section Manager, provide professional and technical work of Engineering projects, studies and other technical projects as assigned.  This position is also open to intermediate-level engineers meeting the minimum qualification of Tier II.

As the Senior Traffic Engineer, you will help run the new Sarasota County Traffic Management Center. This includes working with an active and progressive traffic team implementing state-of-the-art traffic technology. No pigeon hole! Work on everything from signal timing, to system implementation, Board actions, field and office work, research new technology, build – test – operate. Duties:

Support the Chief Traffic Engineer/Manager and Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) Team, train engineering staff, and provide professional and technical work of Engineering projects, studies and other technical projects as assigned.

Leads and manages:

  • Preparation and reporting of transportation studies including traffic, stormwater, roadways, landscaping, etc.
  • Review of construction plans impacting operations referred by Land Development Services and Capital Projects.
  • Various projects and their budgets, as well as the section budget with daily expense management.
  • Review of Temporary Traffic Control (MOT) Plans.
  • Researches, tests and helps to implement new technology in support of the County ATMS.
  • Helps plan and implement equipment and protocols in preparation for connected and autonomous vehicles (AV/CV).
  • Represent Transportation at various community meetings regarding traffic issues. 
  • Investigates customer concerns/inquiries; meets with citizens to define and resolve issues.
  • Interacts with the public, Board of County Commissioners, Traffic Advisory Council, and Community Traffic Safety Team.
  • Perform final roadway field inspection for acceptance by public works for maintenance.
  • Design road projects and elements of projects in support of Public Works, Capital Projects and Utilities.

Manages proactive assessments of fraud awareness, prevention, detection and risk mitigation activities in area of responsibility; oversees financial, compliance, operational and performance audits; reviews audit findings and ensures appropriate controls are established and implemented.

Work Hours:  Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

 Minimum Qualifications for Tier III (Advanced Level Traffic Engineer):

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering and a minimum of four (4) or more years of professional related engineering experience. 
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer by the State of Florida OR the ability to obtain the same in the State of Florida within six (6) months of the date of employment.
  • A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering can be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required.

Minimum Qualifications for Tier II (Traffic Engineer):

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or a related engineering or technical field.  Minimum of three (3) years related engineering experience.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer by the State of Florida OR the ability to obtain the same in the State of Florida within six (6) months of the date of employment.
  • A Master's Degree may substitute for one year of required experience.  Project experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis depending on type of experience.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Experience in traffic or ATMS related projects and technology
  • Advanced Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification
  • Knowledge of Asset management software 
  • Knowledge of ATMS or AV/CV technology

Job Based Competencies:  Microsoft Office Suite; MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and Outlook.  Familiarity with Cartegraph and/or Maximo is desired.

Work Schedule:  This position has been deemed essential during man-made and natural emergencies.  Must be available to work in the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) before and during an emergency activation. 

Physical Demands:  Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.

Pay: $58,115.00 - $75,816.00 Advance Level Traffic Engineer

         $66,581.00 - $86,029.00 Traffic Engineer
